Minister Antonia Urrejola presents Turquoise foreign policy to Magallanes: “Environmental protection must be consolidated as a foreign policy priority”

Today, Chancellor Antonia Urrejola moderated a debate at the University of Magallanes, where she presented the Turquoise Foreign Policy, a priority axis of the work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and which pays particular attention to the protection of environment in terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

This initiative arises in response to the challenges presented by the accelerating climate crisis, which considers the increasing loss of biodiversity and increasing pollution, problems that require concerted actions between countries.

In this sense, the Chancellor emphasized that “from Chile we are convinced that, as a crucial challenge of this century, environmental protection must be consolidated as a foreign policy priority. It is for this reason that we proposed a global and coordinated response in order to find synergies between the different environmental agendas.

To this end, the Turquoise Foreign Policy envisages a series of objectives and priorities that contribute to the positioning of Chile as a relevant actor in the mitigation of climate change, the protection of the ocean and ecosystems, with emphasis particularly on the move towards more sustainable development. model. .

“We must move towards an approach that guarantees the preservation of our environmental wealth, the rights of local communities and allows us to make a productive leap thanks to the transition to clean energy,” stressed the Chancellor. “It is up to us to renew our development strategies and seek growth that guarantees that the generation of wealth today will not impoverish those of tomorrow,” he added.

Actions towards a sustainable development model

In this context, initiatives will continue to be encouraged to establish a representative system of marine protected areas, as well as for the conservation of living resources and their ecosystems, with particular attention to Antarctica.

In this regard, the coalition led by Chile, “The Americas for the Protection of the Ocean”, stands out, which aims to establish a network of interconnected marine ecologically protected areas that stretches from Canada to Chile.

In addition, our country will continue to promote the creation of the Climate Change Observatory, which envisages a network of sensors from the north of our country to the Unión Glacier, which will have scientific information relevant to the international community, an element key in the study of climate change. .

Regarding the transition to a clean energy matrix, the use of green hydrogen will be favored, as well as other clean energies making it possible to achieve decarbonization by 2050, in accordance with the sustainable development goals planned by the United Nations.

Likewise, actions allowing the correct management of chemicals, waste and plastics will be promoted in all international consultation spaces.

“We must deepen the transformation already underway, towards a more balanced, more just and sustainable society. Chile wants to address this challenge through its diplomacy, which is not easy and does not generate immediate solutions. We want to contribute and learn. Contribute and benefit, in a work of alliances and collaboration that we propose from our reality, from the far south, for the benefit of all,” concluded the minister.
