López Obrador congratulates Mexico, despite elimination in Qatar

EFE.- Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador congratulated the football team on Wednesday for their participation in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, in which El Tri were eliminated in the group stage.

“Congratulations to the team, especially for today’s game which gave us moments of joy and hope. Comfort! As expressed centuries ago in the memorials of Culhuacán: “As long as the world remains, the fame and glory of Mexico-Tenochtitlan will not stop”, posted the president on his Twitter account.

El Tri won this Wednesday 2-1 against Saudi Arabia and despite this was excluded from the World Cup because Poland was second in group C for the best goal difference.

Henry Martín and Luis Chávez were the scorers for the French, while Salem Al-Dawsari was the one who discounted for the Saudis.

At Qatar 2022, Mexico saw a streak of seven cut World Cups in which they qualified back-to-back for the round of 16, a mark they only boasted with Brazil.

Moreover, the fall of Qatar marked the end of Argentine Gerardo Martino’s management as Mexico coach, ending a process that began in 2019.

“There is no reason now that makes me think that the future should be different. The contract expired when the referee signaled the end”, explained the South American coach in a press conference after the duel against the Saudis.

Martino took responsibility for the Mexicans’ failure at Qatar 2022, in which they scored just two goals in three games, while conceding three.

“I couldn’t tell people anything at all because I’m most responsible for this terrible disappointment and frustration that we have. As responsible for this, which causes a lot of sadness, I take full responsibility for this great failure,” the strategist said.
