Canada beats Panama to become Nations League finalist

Canada is the first finalist in the Concacaf Nations League after beating Panama 2-0 on Thursday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. This match was the first of two semi-finals played that day; Mexico and the United States defined the second finalist in the second hour.

Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies helped the Canadians advance to the final with their goals.

Panama reached this stage of the tournament having led Group B of League B with 10 points, while Canada did its part in Group C with nine points.

David led the way in the final for the Canadians after receiving a majestic through ball from Kamal Miller on the left. David indicated the path where the ball was waiting and when he connected the ball, he managed to pass to Canalero goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera and open the scoring. It was 1-0 after 25 minutes.

Panama tried to react and, from a free kick, almost equalized in the 28th minute of play. Defender Fidel Escobar took a right-footed shot which crossed one side of the barrier and was pushed away by the Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borja, leaving the ball in the box at the mercy of Cecilio Waterman, who was unable to connect with the rebound.

In the second half, the Canadians practically sealed the game after Davies’ goal. The defender sneaked down the left and took advantage of a nice pass from David to hit the left foot high and increase the lead. With this score, Canada felt closer and closer to reaching the grand final. It was 2-0 in the 70th minute.

Canada will play the final at the same venue on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. PT, while Panama will aim for third place at 3 p.m. PT.
