The Government of Canada announced that as of this Thursday, February 29 Mexicans who wish to travel to this northern country must have a visa that allows them to enter.
According to information from the Société Radio-Canada (CBC), this measure will come into force today at 11:30 p.m.
The above happened after Quebec Premier François Legault asked the federal government to reinstate the visa.
The objective is that it functions as a measure to contain the flow of migrants of Mexican nationality who seek refuge in the province.
Let us remember that Since 2016, Mexicans could enter Canada with only a travel notice, which allowed them to stay there for up to six months.
However, now the situation has changed, since the increase in asylum applications in Quebec is growing disproportionately, in 2023 alone, 60,000 applications were registered, of which only 2,894 of these Mexican applications were approved.
Despite the above, there are some clear exceptions:
- Mexicans who have a valid visa to enter the United States will not need to obtain a Canadian visa.
- Additionally, Mexicans who have obtained a Canadian visa within the last ten years can apply for a simple electronic travel authorization instead of a full visa.
- Individuals holding a work or study permit in Canada do not need an additional visa to enter this country.
