Although Canada opted for relatively sporty outfits for the opening ceremony and medal podiums, its closing ceremony jackets are made of denim and splashed with graffiti and “spray-painted” maple leaves.

The jackets, designed by Hudson's Bay and Levi's, will be paired with white jeans from the latter brand. The outfit is a “version of the iconic Canadian tuxedo,” according to the Team Canada website, referring to the nickname given to the oft-maligned double denim outfit, one of Canadians' favorite clothing choices. Although the jackets were initially introduced last year, images of the clothing re-emerged on social media this Wednesday, with reactions ranging from “unique and fun” until “cancel the Olympic Games“.

Meanwhile, writer and podcast host Dana Piccoli wrote: “Obsessed with Canada's super casual Olympic outfits. Yes, wear those jeans. Cover them with enamel pins.”

For their part, Ralph Lauren's creations for the United States team also received varied reactions on social networks. “Every four years, Ralph Lauren goes out of his way to dress our best athletes in the most unstylish outfits possible,” Daily Beast reporter Max Tani tweeted.

Various athletes, from wrestler Jordan Burroughs to water polo star Ashleigh Johnson, have worn the white uniforms, featuring navy collars and red laces. The clothes were made using “more sustainable materials and manufacturing practices” than in previous years, the brand said.

This isn't the first time U.S. Olympic athletes have worn Ralph Lauren, which has been the official brand of Team USA since 2008. It's also not the first time Team Canada has worn denim at the Games.
