The horror film “The Nun II” was the top-grossing film this weekend in North America with $32.6 million, the studio reported Sunday.
The Warner Bros. film, a sequel to the one released in 2018, was screened in 3,728 theaters.
The film, directed by Michael Graves and starring Taissa Farmiga and Storm Reid, didn’t gross as much as the first release ($53.8 million), but it was still a solid release. “The Nun” films are part of the so-called Conjuring universe, which already has nine films and $2.1 billion at the box office.
“The Nun II” edged out “Equalizer 3” (starring Denzel Washington) into second place in its second weekend. The Columbia Pictures film added $12.1 million, bringing its domestic total to $61.9 million and its international total to $107.7 million.
The third version was the third version of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” (Nia Vardalos), which arrives 21 years after the first and was an unexpected success, grossing $369 million on a production budget of $5 million. Released by Focus Features in 3,650 theaters, the third version grossed about $10 million, mostly from women (71%) aged 25 or older (83%).
Vardalos wrote, directed and starred in “Greek Wedding 3,” which again stars John Corbett and is set in Greece.
