During the first extraordinary session of the Foreign Relations Commission of Congress, Foreign Minister Javier González-Olaechea Franco presented the main orientations of the Strengthened Foreign Policy (PER) developed under his administration.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs explained that the first axis of the PER is the foreign policy of neighborhood and border integration where it is specified that Peru attaches the greatest importance to links with the countries of the region and, in particular, with its neighbors, “with which it seeks dialogue, coordination and cooperation within the framework of existing regional, subregional and bilateral mechanisms, which include, among others, presidential meetings and binational cabinets.“.

In this sense, he indicated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the National Council for the Development and Integration of Borders (CONADIF) which he chairs, continues the integration of border areas into the national development processes of articulated manner with the three levels of government, as well as strengthening the integration processes of these localities with neighboring countries through the corresponding bilateral mechanisms.

In the axis of hemispheric and regional foreign policy, andl Peru will seek to strengthen the institutional governance mechanisms of the Organization of American States (OAS) and propose to strengthen the financing system for its activities through contributions from member states.ensuring that they are used for their intended purposes.

Likewise, he indicated that through the PER, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will seek to intensify the excellent level of relations with the United States of America and Canada and will prioritize Peru’s participation in the Alliance for Economic Prosperity of the Americas (APEP).

Strengthen relationships

Concerning the “Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa and Middle East” axis, he stressed that Peru will strengthen political dialogue with Europe, through the holding of bilateral consultation mechanisms with community and non-community countries, by promoting high-level contacts, negotiation and signing of agreements in the political, economic, scientific, technological, cultural and educational fields, mainly.

It will also strengthen its relations with Asia and Oceania, through the network of diplomatic missions in China, Japan, Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand and ASEAN countries. Likewise, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will explore bigger and better opportunities with China, Peru’s main trading partner.

Concerning international cooperation as one of the axes of the PER, the Chancellor indicated that coordination will be strengthened with cooperating sources for the development of projects in regions facing challenges in terms of socio-economic development, food security, institutional capacity, technology, equipment and disaster preparedness. and response.

Regarding the axis of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC), the Chancellor indicated that the Peruvian presidency of this bloc will seek to bring the APEC agenda closer. to citizens through the “APEC Citizen” initiative, so that the population knows the advantages and opportunities offered by this forum.
