Reiterating the importance of ensuring the protection and conservation of ecosystems and natural resources, in collaboration with the communities, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) supported the positions of the inhabitants concerning the initiatives of mining projects on their territories, as well as the case of Temixco, in Morelos, where protest movements have been identified to claim their right to a healthy environment.
The agency indicated that in this entity, the “Esperanza I” and “Esperanza II” mining concessionsof the company Esperanza silver from Mexicoa subsidiary of the Canadian Alamos Gold Inc., covers areas in the municipalities of Temixco, Xochitepec, Miacatlán, Emiliano Zapata and Coatetelco, where its activities they endanger the human and environmental health of at least 200,000 people.
Semarnat pointed out that the environmental impacts of mining extraction and use result in inability to develop sustainable economic activities due to land contamination and surface and groundwater.
Moreover, as it is an activity with high water demand, it represents a potential risk of scarcity of this resource in the region.
Given this situation, he said that the Government of Mexico remains committed to not to grant new mining authorizations in broad daylight in the face of the high number of operating permits granted during the neoliberal era.
“With this, the commitment to life, health and ecology is ratified, for the benefit of our peoples and the health of our ecosystems.”
