Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping to meet on November 15 in the United States

The American president, Joe Biden, and the Chinese president, Xi Jinpingare expected to meet on November 15 in San Francisco in what will be the first summit of the two rival powers in a yearsources with knowledge of the matter said.

Both governments have yet to publicly confirm whether the Xi-Biden summit will take place, but have given numerous indications that they expect it to take place.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on October 31 that Washington He hoped for a “constructive conversation in San Francisco” between the two presidents.

This summit would be the first between the two leaders since long talks in November 2022 in Bali, on the sidelines of a G20 summit.

Both Biden and Xi spoke positively about the talks and said they were looking for ways to avoid conflict. But tensions resurfaced several times.

Earlier this year, the United States protested what it described as a Chinese spy balloon over American soil.

China, for its part, is outraged by the growing American pressure, which includes restrictions on high-tech chips, which Washington fears Beijing could use for military purposes.

Tensions are particularly high around Taiwan, an autonomous democracy that Beijing claims and has not ruled out taking by force.

China has held major military exercises in response to pro-Taiwan actions by U.S. Congressional leaders.
