Pope Francis cancels trip to Africa due to knee problems

The dad francisco canceled one travel To Africa scheduled for July on doctor’s orders due to problems in his kneethe Vatican said on Friday, adding to fears over the 85-year-old pontiff’s health and mobility issues.

The July 2-7 trip to Congo and South Sudan will be postponed “to a later date to be determined,” the Vatican said.

“At the request of their doctors, and in order not to harm the results of the therapy suffering for his knee, the Holy Father was forced to postpone, despite himself, his apostolic journey to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan,” the Vatican said in a statement.

Francisco has been in a wheelchair for a month due to ligament strain in his right knee which causes pain when walking and standing.

However, plans for the trip to the two African countries were continuing and the Vatican had released the list of journalists accredited to fly on the papal plane.

Francis plans to visit Canada July 24-30. The Vatican statement did not mention the trip, and spokesman Matteo Bruni said only that the pope’s other commitments were confirmed.
