SPORT CLIMBING MAKES ITS DEBUT AT PAN AMERICAN GAMES

This discipline made its debut at Tokyo 2020 and is now making its debut at Santiago 2023.

Sport climbing makes its debut Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games at Cerrillos Park, a venue that will also host baseball and softball.

The competition consists of three rounds. The first wall is a speed wall, it is 15 meters high and has two identical courses (A and B), where one player from each side competes to win the fastest time to climb the tower. The second is the block and the third is the difficulty; the latter two have in common that athletes must use all their agility and resistance to reach the top.

This sport is still on the sporting program of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which is why the gold medalists of each event of Santiago 2023 will obtain their direct place at the Paris Games.

FIGURES TO FOLLOW

A total of 68 athletes from across the continent will take part in the climbing walls. The categories will be divided into two: speed and bouldering and lead divided between the men's and women's branches for each category.

Top international athletes will participate in Santiago 2023. Canada will be represented by prominent faces, such as Michael Finn-Henry (24) and Erica Velev (21). From Ecuador, Domenica Ruano (18 years old), Gabriel Jean (16 years old) and Isaac Salvador (31 years old) stand out.
