CANADA WINS GOLD IN TRACK CYCLING TEAM PURSUIT

Competitors from Mexico and Colombia won the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Canada hosted the second day of track cycling at the Peñalolén Velodrome, where the crowd thrilled with the women’s team pursuit and Keirin finals. In the case of the pursuit, the Canadians won gold in 16 laps of the oval with a time of 4:23 seconds, displacing the Mexicans (4:30) who had to settle for silver. The bronze medal went to Colombia, which scored 4:24 seconds in the definition against the United States (4:30).

The strategy for the Canadians, Devaney Collier, Fiona Majendie, Kiara Lylyk and Ruby Dickson West, focused on team and individual training in Ontario ahead of these Games, where they spent two weeks focusing on achieving a better time. Regarding winning the gold medal, the Canadians said they felt a pleasant welcome from the Chilean public.

“This medal means a lot to us. We came here with high hopes of doing good laps and winning the gold medal. “This is the biggest event we have ever experienced and to be a part of something at this level is very special and to win gold is incredible,” Collier commented with her enthusiastic teammates and their medals hanging.

Some riders will compete on Thursday with the main objective of scoring points for qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

MARTHA BAYONA IS THE QUEEN OF KEIRIN

The Colombian Martha Bayona, world vice-champion at Glasglow 2023, took first place and brought the sixth gold medal to Colombia, with a time of 10.948 seconds. On the other hand, the Mexican Luz Gaxiola (+0.273) and the Jamaican Dahlia Palmer (+0.286) obtained silver and bronze respectively.

Martha managed to revalidate her title as queen of keirin, since at the Pan American Games in Lima 2019 she also won gold in this specialty.

“We were very connected during the race. We saw that I did everything he told me and I was on the first place of the podium, I am proud to give this medal to my country,” said Bayona very excited.
