United States President Joe Biden on Wednesday issued a stern warning to Iran to “be careful” of its actions in the region following Hamas’ attack on Israel.

During a roundtable with Jewish community leaders about his administration’s efforts to provide support to Israel, Biden highlighted U.S. assistance, adding that he speaks frequently with the Prime Israeli Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The United States is “increasing military aid to the Israel Defense Forces, including munitions and interceptors to resupply Iron Dome, we have moved the U.S. aircraft carrier fleet to the Eastern Mediterranean, and we are sending more aircraft “We’ve made it clear, we’ve made it clear to the Iranians: be careful,” Biden said.

In his remarks, Biden also addressed reports of atrocities committed by Hamas.

“It’s important for Americans to see what’s happening; I mean, I’ve been doing this for a long time, I never really thought I would see this and have confirmed footage of terrorists beheading children,” Biden said.

Biden affirmed the full strength of his administration’s commitment to rescuing hostages held by Hamas, telling the group that while “we are working on all aspects of the hostage crisis in Israel,” if he could convey in details the measures he was taking in government, “I couldn’t bring them home.

“My friends, we are doing a lot of things…we are doing a lot of things, I have not given up hope of bringing these people home,” he said. “But the idea that I’m going to stand here in front of you and tell you what I do is strange, so I hope you understand how strange I think it would be to try to answer that question.”

A little background on Iran: Iranian President Ebrahim Raïssi spoke by telephone this Sunday with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and then congratulated the Palestinian people for their “victory” over Israel.

This Monday, however, the Iranian mission to the United Nations declared that the Islamic Republic “was not involved in the Palestinian response”, referring to the Hamas attack. “This was taken exclusively by Palestine itself,” he said.

Israel says Iran supports Hamas to the tune of around $100 million a year. The US State Department said in 2021 that the group received funding, weapons and training from Iran, as well as some funds raised in Gulf Arab countries.

The United States has collected specific intelligence that suggests Saturday’s attack took senior Iranian government officials by surprise, according to multiple sources familiar with the information.

The existence of this information casts doubt on the notion that Iran was directly involved in planning, resourcing or approving the operation, according to the sources.
