Davidovich, Djokovic’s first rival in Cincy

The Spaniard topped his debut against Etcheverry on Tuesday

MADRID, August 15 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Spanish tennis player Alejandro Davidovich beat Argentinian Tomás Martín Etcheverry on Tuesday with a 6-3 double on his debut at the Cincinnati tournament (USA), the seventh Masters 1000 of the season, to now meet Serbian Novak Djokovic .

“Foki”, who shone in the Toronto tournament last week until falling in the semi-finals, started the next North American date of the summer on the right foot, heading for the US Open. As in the Canadian Masters 1000, the native of Malaga had not won a victory in Cincy until this week, with a first victory in his pocket.

The match had ‘break’ options for both in the first set, but the Spaniard took much better advantage of it for a 4-0 opener which he didn’t lose. Etcheverry got up on recovery, this time with an exchange of ‘breaks’ in the second.

However, Davidovich added another break in game five to regain the lead towards a debut and a fast lane win. The Spaniard will be Djokovic’s first rival in the second round of Cincy, where the Serb returns after falling in the Wimbledon final a month ago against Carlos Alcaraz from whom he wants to snatch the world number one.
