Canada’s wildfires will shroud New York and the Northeast in a haze of smoke

(CNN) — Smoke from wildfires still raging in Canada is expected to blanket part of the northeastern United States on Monday, generating haze in the cities of New York and Massachusetts, forecasters say.

“Current forecasts indicate that a plume of wildfire smoke could reach New York City around dawn this Monday morning, causing noticeably hazy skies,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams, in a warning to residents this Sunday.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation forecasts moderate air quality conditions at 55 on its Air Quality Index, alerting residents with pre-existing health conditions to take precautions. necessary precautions given the expected air quality.

“Canada’s wildfires continue to produce smoke in New York State and high altitude smoke may be visible in the state today through tomorrow, although levels of fine particles in the state Eastern and Upstate New York. “They will remain in a good to moderate range today. as the smoke clears,” read a post from the agency on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Residents of southern New England woke up to dense fog this Sunday morning, and the National Weather Service said foggier weather was “expected as wildfire smoke arrives from Canada.” according to an article on X from the NWS Boston.

Cities like Boston and Providence are at the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” level, or a level 3 out of 6, according to CNN’s weather team, but the forecast for much of the Northeast is expected to be moderate, or a level 2 out of 6. 6., for this Monday. Meanwhile, Canadian authorities forecast moderate air quality in Toronto from Sunday afternoon to Monday morning, warning that “people with heart and lung diseases” should take precautions as they will most likely be affected by the air quality.

Smoke continues to impact regional air quality as Canada faces its worst wildfire season on record. In the Northeast alone, there are currently more than 50 forest fires in Ontario and five active fires in Quebec.
