El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele on Tuesday justified before the UN General Assembly his controversial security policy, which his government says has significantly reduced the country’s homicide rate.

“If we had left the prosecutor and the previous magistrates, we would still be the murder capital of the world”, declared the president in his speech during the general debate of the 78th. session of the General Assembly.

Bukele said that currently El Salvador rivals Canada to become the safest nation on the continent and attributes this to policies developed internally, without following foreign revenues.

“There is no formula that works the same for everyone, but there is one ingredient that everyone should have: courage; “You have to have courage, attitude, determination, even when others criticize you.”he said, according to the Sputnik news agency.

Likewise, Bukele said his government aspires to reverse emigration and bring back more Salvadorans than those who leave the country.

“We know there is a long way to go to get there, but we are on track to achieve our goal of reversing the mass exodus of Salvadorans, a product of past bad policies, and realize our dream of having reverse migration, so that more Salvadorans return than those who leave”said.
