London, England.- Spaniard Carlos Sainz Jr (Ferrari), 27, took the first pole position of his career in Formula 1, this Saturday at the end of the qualifying session for the British Grand Prix, ahead of World Cup leader Dutchman Max Verstappen.
On the wet asphalt of the mythical Silverstone track, with the rain present for a good part of the day, the second starting line will be for the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), third, and the Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull), fourth.
“It was a good lap, I was struggling with the water a lot,” Sainz said.
“Pole is a bit of a surprise,” added Sainz, currently fifth overall.
Local hero and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton will start from fifth on the grid in his Mercedes.
His partner George Russell, of the eighth. Mercedes, like Alpine and Williams, arrived at Silverstone with a series of modifications to their cars.
For the Silver Arrows, it is a question of returning after a difficult start to the season due to the new regulations.
The last Briton on the grid, Lando Norris (McLaren), will start sixth, the Spaniard Fernando Alonso seventh at the wheel of his Alpine, while the Chinese Zhou Guanyu (Alfa Romeo) was ninth, his best qualifying performance since arriving at F1 this season.
