Canada thwarts dream start

Yesterday, Canada spoiled what would have been Spain’s dream in La Cartuja (Seville). In front of their audience, the locals were unable to achieve either of their two matches, since Rebeka Masarova lost to Marina Stakusic (6-3 and 6-1) and Sara Sorribes fought to the end against Leylah Fernández, but in the end she ended up falling in both tie-breaks of a closely contested match between the two (7-6 and 7-6).

In this way, the national team coached by Anabel Medina will face Poland tomorrow with the obligation to win to try to “scratch” a miraculous qualification for the semi-finals of the championship, something that was complicated against the North Americans in adding no victory, without needing the doubles match to decline the duel.

First, Stakusic dominated Masarova, whom she beat in 70 minutes. The Spaniard, 65th in the world, finalist in Auckland this season, always went against the grain against a more daring opponent who showed no signs of her debut.

The Canadian took advantage of her rival’s errors (up to 33 direct) and quickly took the initiative in the first set, managing to break the second game in the service of the home team (3-1). In the second set, the situation will repeat itself at the first opportunity (0-4), and Masarova was also unable to take advantage of the five opportunities to break her opponent’s serve during the match.

In the second round, all the pressure fell on the shoulders of Sorribes who fought with pride until the end, forcing her opponent to win two hotly contested tie-breaks.

In almost three hours of play, the North American secured her victory in a first match during which she won the tie-break. In the second round, Sorribes enjoyed a good advantage which he ultimately lost.
