Despite the presence of great firsts on Netflixjust like the new movie Adam Sandler You’re not invited to my Bat Mitzvah!, the last production in which he participated Yalitza AparicioLa Grande Seduction, has become one of the most watched on the platform in recent days, as it is not only the most acclaimed among Spanish speakers, but it also competes among the world’s top spots.

The great seduction

Directed by Celso R. García, this film represents the third remake from a 2003 Canadian film. Basically, it tells the story of a fishing village forgotten by the world and who barely manages to survive thanks to government aid. However, there is a possibility of create a fish factory this would provide employment for all residents. The only requirement is to have a doctor in the community, so the town will come up with a plan to trick a young doctor making him think he’s arrived at the perfect place for him.

It is true that “La Grande Séduction” is a film whose outcome is intuitive almost from the start, it lacks surprises, innovation and originality in its narrative. However, as this is a film of the costumbrista genre, what really stands out is not the plot itself, the depth of the characters (which is rare in this case), nor the dramatic arcs that they live, but rather the unequivocal representation of a community, culture or society that we can all identify from our own humanity. In this case, it is a humble Latin American city, far from modernity and mired in poverty, which the Latin American community can recognize as a reflection of its economic, social and political reality.

In this context, the film connects with the viewer by showing the simplest, most authentic and most human face of Mexican culture and Latino culture in general. It does this by using the ignorance generated by distance as a stage for comic moments, following the example of other productions of the same genre, such as the Italian “Cinema Paradiso”, the Spanish “Ocho apellidos vascos” or the French ” Welcome to the land of madness”.

While Guillermo Villegas stands out for his charisma in the film and Yalitza Aparicio, five years after his performance in “Roma”, presents a flat and emotionless performance that does not go unnoticed. “La Grande Séduction” achieves its main objective by building a friendly narrative that reaches its climax towards the end with the emotional reunion between the members of an immigrant family. This moment represents the most human heart of the story and is something the audience can relate to closely.
