Canadian Bianca Andreescu advanced to the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Wednesday after a back injury forced second seed Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil to withdraw.

Andreescu led 3-0 at the end of the match with Haddad Maia clearly in pain. After several setbacks and much downtime due to his own injuries, he is seeking a fourth career title. The previous three took place in 2019, and this will be her first quarterfinal at the WTA 500 level or above since 2022.

Another Canadian also advanced to the quarterfinals when Leylah Fernandez beat No. 8 seed Varvara Gracheva of France 6-0, 3-6, 7-5. No. 6 seed Diana Shnaider of Russia had no trouble with Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova in a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Shnaider will next face Sayaka Ishii after the Japanese beat Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Opening of Guangzhou

Defending champion Xiyu Wang survived a marathon third set to defeat fellow Chinese Sijia Wei 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 and advance to the quarterfinals in her home country.

Wang won the two-hour, 18-minute match when he converted his fourth break point on Wei's serve to stay in the match in the third set, which took up about half the match. Wang converted five of the 11 break chances he had, while Wei converted only two.

In the next round, Wang will face Italian Lucia Bronzetti, who beat Romanian Jaqueline Cristian 7-6 (5), 6-4. Also reaching the quarterfinals was seventh-seeded Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who eliminated China's Shi Han 6-3, 6-4 and Serbia's Olga Danilovic. Danilovic stunned fifth-seeded Frenchwoman Diane Parry 6-1, 6-0 in 74 minutes.
