On November 12, 1990, the enthronement of Akihito as the 125th Emperor of Japan. The ceremony lasted 30 minutes according to the same rites used in the Japanese imperial household for a thousand years. More than 2,500 guests, including dignitaries from 157 countries, including then-Prince Felipe de Bourbon, attended the proclamation ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. A total of seven banquets were organized to celebrate the enthronement of the new emperor.

Akihito ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne after more than a year of mourning the death of his father, Emperor Hirohito. The official name of his reign is the Heisei era and when he dies he will be called Emperor Heisei.
