Lance Stroll has shown on video how his “miraculous” recovery allowed him to race in the 2023 Bahrain F1 GP after suffering a serious cycling accident in southern Spain and missing pre-season testing.
The Canadian driver suffered multiple fractures as a result of the accident and was unable to take part in the Bahrain tests before participating in the Grand Prix, but he delivered a heroic performance -said by Fernando Alonso himself- and even scored a good number of points for the team.
It was first revealed that Stroll’s injuries were mainly to his wrists, but Lance himself told the Grand Prix that he also broke the big toe on his right foot. Now the Aston Martin driver has shown how the process was.
“Today I want to take a moment to reflect on the past two weeks and share my story with you,” Lance Stroll posted on Instagram.
“On Saturday February 18, I fell off my bike while training in Spain. Tests showed that I had a displaced fracture in my right wrist, a fracture in my left wrist, a partial fracture in my left hand and finally another fracture to the left hand big toe of the right foot.
“With the start of the season fast approaching, the timing couldn’t have been worse. My medical team, at the start, believed that not only would I miss the tests, but also the first races.”
“48 hours after my accident and 12 days before the first race, Dr. Mir successfully operated on my right wrist. After the operation, Dr. Mir told me that he would come back to Jeddah if I worked hard and, with any luck, I was optimistic about Bahrain but it was far away. To this day, I am confident that the urgency that Dr. Mir showed me helped me get to Bahrain.
“The work was not done. Unfortunately, Dr. Mir explained that my hand/wrist and toe fractures were not amenable to fixation and that I would have to rely on a more conservative approach to treat my other injuries. “
“My medical team made sure to do anything that showed signs of healing. It became my full-time job, trying to combine whatever helped, even if it was 0.5 per cent.”
“In the beginning, progress was slow and I needed a lot of help, even with daily chores around the house. But every day I was improving and once the cast came out on the fourth day, it was possible to have a chance to compete in Bahrain. My medical team came up with a program that would help me restore mobility and strength to my wrists.”
“Rehabilitation took hard work and perseverance, but with an amazing medical team and the support of my friends and family, I was able to overcome the pain and get back on track in Bahrain with my team and my teammates. And we did it!”
“I’m grateful to everyone who supported me, sent beautiful messages and good wishes!” Stroll said in closing.
