FRISCO, Texas — Alex Morgan and Mallory Swanson scored as the United States beat Brazil 2-1 on Wednesday to win the SheBelieves Cup for the fourth consecutive year.
Japan, who beat Canada 3-0 in the previous match at Toyota Stadium, were runners-up in the four-team round robin. The four SheBelieves Cup teams will contest the Women’s World Cup this summer in Australia and New Zealand.
Morgan’s goal is beyond the reach of Brazilian goalkeeper Lorena. Morgan now has five all-time goals in SheBelieves Cup games.
It was Morgan’s 14th goal since giving birth to her daughter in 2020, giving her the national team record for most goals as a mother.
“It was huge,” Swanson said. “I think we needed it, we needed a push to change in our favor. (It was) Alex doing Alex stuff. Simple, left foot, classic. She was beaten for the whole first half and she finally punished them.”
Swanson scored in the 63rd minute, his fourth goal of the tournament and his seventh goal overall this year, equaling his tally for all of last year.
“Honestly, I think it was a good race. I really tried to focus on just being there and taking it day by day, game by game,” Swanson said.
Swanson, formerly Mallory Pugh, married Chicago Cubs player Dansby Swanson in December.
Ludmila scored a throw-in to prevent Brazil from falling to zero. It was the first goal the United States allowed this year.
“We have to be on the same wavelength. But not just when it comes to reading the game, but also the emotional game, we have to be on the same page. If we can do that, I think we will have a great World Cup. If we can’t, it will be very difficult. That’s why I say we have a long way to go,” said Brazil coach Pia Sundhage.
Midfielder Rose Lavelle started for the United States after missing the first two games of the tournament with a minor injury.
The SheBelieves Cup kicked off with a tribute to Alex Morgan and a triumphant debut for the United States against Canada thanks to a brace from Mallory Swanson. In addition, Brazil won against Japan.
Japan snapped a four-game losing streak with victory over Canada. Japan had not scored in four straight games, including two SheBelieves Cup games, until Kiko Seike put his side ahead with a goal in the 26th minute.
The Canadian players, in the midst of a labor dispute with their federation, resumed wearing purple “Enough Ya” jerseys for anthems and purple wristbands during the game.
Players from the United States also wore purple wristbands in solidarity with Canada.
The SheBelieves Cup began in 2016. The United States has won six of the eight tournaments.
“I don’t think we’re going to talk much about the title. In fact, we are going to talk a lot about the match and the details, and we are going to use these matches to prepare for the World Cup,” said USA coach Vlatko Andonovski.
“So that’s what’s great, it’s not necessarily the title, obviously we liked winning, we liked winning the title, but it’s the result of this match that is the most important for us.”
