USA eliminates Canada and regains control of the World Baseball Classic

Team USA swept to a landslide victory over Canada on Monday night, winning 12-1 in a game that ended in the Mercy Rule at the World Baseball Classic.

Angels star Mike Trout hit a three-run homer, Lance Lynn threw an impressive five innings and Team USA used a nine-run first inning to beat Canada in front of 29,621 fans at Chase Field in Phoenix.

The mercy rule in the WBC is a 10-run deficit after seven innings, so the game ended after Canada struck in the top of the seventh.

The United States improved to 2-1 and rebounded from an 11-5 loss to Mexico on Sunday with their best offensive performance of the tournament in what looked like a must-win for the Americans.

The United States allowed Canada only five hits. Chicago White Sox right-hander Lynn went five innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out six.

Angels superstar Trout went 1-for-2 with a three-run homer in the first inning.

It all started with an offensive explosion late in the first period as Team USA lit up the scoring for nine runs, including four against 19-year-old Canadian first baseman Mitch Bratt.

Team USA will face Team Colombia on Wednesday, with a World Baseball Classic quarterfinal berth on the line.

The United States leads Group C with a 2-1 record, followed by Colombia (1-1), Mexico (1-1) and Canada (1-1). Great Britain is last in this sector with a score of 1-2.

On Tuesday, Colombia take on Canada at 12pm PT, while Mexico take on Great Britain at 7pm in do-or-die matches for all teams.
