UN — News in brief with Lourdes Mendoza

Last month was one of the hottest Julys on record anywhere in the world, reported the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a UN specialized agency based in Geneva.

“The world has just experienced one of the three hottest Julys on record. And, as we all know, a very long and intense heat wave affected different parts of Europe,” the door said. -WMO spokesperson, Clare Nullis, at a press conference.

In a press release, the agency explains, citing data from the Copernicus climate change service, that last month was slightly cooler than July 2019, but slightly warmer than July 2016.

“But the difference between those three months is really, really small,” Nullis said. “The deviation is less than the margin of error.”

In general, the temperature recorded in the last month exceeded that recorded in July during the reference period 1991-2020 by 0.4°C.

And this, despite the presence of the natural phenomenon La Niña which, according to the WMO, “is supposed to have a cooling effect”.

Last month, the agency called on world leaders to “wake up” to heat waves like the one currently experiencing in Europe, which are expected to become more frequent due to climate change at least until the 2060s.
