Robles hopes that Russia will not attack NATO countries: “It would be a qualitative step which we understand will not take place”
The Minister of Defense, Margarita Roblesestimated this Friday that “the situation is very complicated” in the face of a war “of particular cruelty” with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, although hope there will be no aggression against NATO countries. “It’s a qualitative step that we understand will not happen,” he said.
Interviewed in Seville before attending the presentation of the book “The limits of the law of armed conflict: new means and methods of warfare”. Essays in memory of Rosario Domínguez Matés’, the Minister insisted that “Russia is very clear that any attack on a NATO country would be an attack on all members”so that, although “the situation is very complicated”, he indicated that he did not have this concern and, therefore, he hopes that “this ‘status quo’ will not change”.
In this context, Robles highlighted the “Very clear threats” from Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which “he did not rule out anything”but assured that “Putin must be clear that this is a war he is not going to win” taking into account that “all the countries of the European Union, NATO and the Western world are against this war”.
Thus, Robles recalled that NATO’s strategy remains the same, with “absolute and total support for Ukraine and non-intervention”, understanding that it is an invasion of Ukraine. “NATO countries will support Ukraine until the end but there will be no intervention against Russia by NATO countries under any circumstances”highlighted.
