Two players of Latin origin will play with Canada at the World Cup in Qatar

The Canadian national team has announced the roster of 26 players who will represent the country at its first FIFA World Cup in Qatar for men since 1986.

Among those called up, two players of Latin American origin stand out: Jonathan Osori Yes Lucas Cavallini.

Jonathan Osori

Jonathan Osorio’s parents are Colombian, his father is from Cali, while his mother was born in Medellín.

He was born on June 12, 1992 and plays as a midfielder for Major League Soccer club Toronto FC. In fact, he holds Toronto FC’s club record for most appearances.

Lucas Cavallini

Lucas Cavallini was born in Canada to an Argentinian father and a Canadian mother.

He left Canada at the age of 16 and traveled to South America to develop his football skills and joined the first Uruguayan national team.

In 2017, Cavallini was loaned out to Liga MX side Puebla, becoming the first Canadian to play in Mexico’s top flight since Isidro Sánchez Macip in 2010.

In December 2019, Puebla and Major League Soccer side Vancouver Whitecaps FC agreed a transfer, with Cavallini signing a three-year deal with the club ahead of the 2020 MLS season.

Other team stars

Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies and Lille’s Jonathan David are the stars of the squad that will travel with Canada to the World Cup in Qatar, with Porto’s Stephen Eustáquio and Club Brugge’s Cyle Larin among other key players.

Canada’s roster includes 11 players from Major League Soccer, including six from CF Montreal, three from Toronto FC and one from the Vancouver Whitecaps.
