Ottawa, Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday there were “clear indications” that India had violated Canadian sovereignty in a conflict over the killing of a Sikh separatist in Vancouver on Wednesday. last year, which led both countries to expel their ambassadors.
“We had clear indications, certainly clearer than ever, that India had violated the sovereignty of Canada,” Trudeau told a commission of inquiry into foreign interference.
Canadian police announced Monday that they had “evidence” of “the involvement of Indian government agents in serious criminal activities in Canada,” including the 2023 murder of Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Nijjar, who immigrated to Canada in 1997 and became a citizen of that country in 2015, advocated declaring part of India an independent Sikh state under the name Khalistan.
Nijjar was wanted by Indian authorities for alleged terrorism and conspiracy to commit murder.
Trudeau had previously said there were “credible allegations” linking Indian intelligence to the crime in Vancouver, which severed diplomatic relations.
Last Monday, Canada and India expelled their respective ambassadors as well as five other high-ranking diplomats from both countries.
