Trudeau’s schedule
Trudeau plans to visit the National Palace on Monday afternoon, where López Obrador will host dinner for the leaders and their wives. During his stay, the Canadian President also meet business leaders of the three countries in Mexico City.
He also plans to speak with the Mexican President of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) to address, in particular, the energy sector, which would help attract more foreign investment to Mexico, in addition to solving the problems of the indigenous peoples of both nations.
The United States and Canada began consultations within the USMCA last year to question Mexico’s energy policy, which favors public enterprises over foreign investment.
Summit of the Three Amigos
The last visit of the Canadian Prime Minister to Mexico dates back to October 2017, during the sexennium of Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018) in full renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which had been in effect since 1994 between the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The North American Leaders’ Summit, known as the “Three friends”, It will be held on Tuesday, January 10, with the participation of the three leaders, who will discuss issues related to security, economy and international affairs.
The last time Biden, López Obrador and Trudeau met was in November 2021 at the White House. Under the presidency of Donald Trump (2017-2021) no “Three Amigos” summit took place.
