After updating its privacy policy, the social network TikTok has admitted to accessing European users’ data from its headquarters outside the continent in order to ensure that their experience is positive, but remember that all they font is under the legislation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union.
TikTok is the social network that has grown the most in recent years, especially among the younger population, although over time it has gradually gained followers from older generations. And despite this boom, the Chinese application has been harshly criticized and questioned for his lack of privacy regarding user information.
It was this week that the company introduced its new data privacy policy, and among the updates we see that TikTok admits that it can access European user information from its headquarters in Brazil, Canada, China, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea and United States
This may sound somewhat controversial, since the intention of the EU is that the data of European citizens does not leave the territory of the euroeven so, from TikTok they assure that their new policy is GDPR compliant.
“(It is done) on the basis of a demonstrated need to do its job, subject to a robust set of security controls and approval protocols, and using methods recognized by the GDPR [el reglamento general de protección de datos de la UE]” has explained Elaine Fox, Chief Privacy Officer of TikTok Europe.
And it is that the company accesses the data check aspects such as the proper functioning of algorithms and the introduction of new tools in order to know if they work correctly in addition to knowing if they use them.
In turn, the platform has addressed another of the most questioned issues. TikTok has denied secretly collecting data regarding the precise location of users in Europewhether with GPS or any other technology, although it is true that in their updated policy it says “With your permission, we may also collect precise location information”, but as they point out, It will always be with permission.
TikTok is undoubtedly the social network that worries the European data protection authorities the most, and for this reason this application will be constantly monitored so that it does not violate anything of the GDPR.
