The Canadian capital extraction company Caliber Mining, one of the largest in the country, withdrew three requests for mining concessions, after the sanctions imposed by the United States against the regime of Daniel Ortega in this sector.
The resolution was published this Tuesday in the official newspaper, La Gaceta, a day after the government of Joe Biden sanctioned the General Directorate of Mines of Nicaragua for having considered it the means that the dictatorship uses to continue to profit from production and sale of gold. “to oppress the people and even support the Russian invasion of Ukraine”.

The canceled mining concessions correspond to areas totaling more than 125,000 hectares, located between the municipalities of Waspam, Bonanza, Rosita and Puerto Cabezas, in the northern Caribbean. Although the Department of Energy and Mines publicized the cancellation on Tuesday, Caliber Mining submitted its resignation in June when the United States sanctioned state-owned Eniminas.
The mining company clarified today that “it is proactively reviewing recent sanctions and has communicated with the United States Department of Treasury to ensure full compliance with these provisions.”
Ileana Pérez, who coordinated the southern judicial district which corresponds to the departments of Rivas and Granada, argued before the deputies that her resignation was for “health reasons”.
The former magistrate has become the most important official of the Supreme Court of Justice who has been removed from office in recent weeks. Previously, the Ortega Murillo had abruptly “expelled” two officials loyal to the regime and imprisoned spokesman Roberto Larios, amid resignations and dismissals.
The independent observatory Urnas Abiertas denounced that the Ortega deputies and the collaborationist parties are “desperate” to hide the abstentionism which, according to them, will be registered in the municipal elections scheduled for next November 6. For this reason, they promote the initiative of the special law on the validity of expired identity cards.
The organization indicated that with this proposal, the regime seeks to allow the incorporation and activation of citizens with expired cells on the electoral list, so that they can vote without inconvenience.
