The Undersecretary for Food Self-Sufficiency, Victor Suarezinsisted that the government will ensure the protection of the genetic diversity of corn and the health of Mexicans.

By videoconference, the undersecretary for food self-sufficiency clarified that the importation of transgenic corn is only authorized for industrial and feed purposes, and not for human consumption.

“I just emphasize that the presidential decree of February 13, 2023 emphasizes two objectives, the protection of the genetic diversity of our country’s indigenous corn and therefore the commercial planting of transgenic corn is prohibited to avoid contamination of the wealth of our natives.

Second, the use of transgenic corn for human consumption is prohibited to prioritize and protect the health of Mexicans, which comes above any other commercial or commercial interest.

The undersecretary said the importation of transgenic corn into the country has not been affected, explaining that among 10 millions tonnes imported, 17 million comes from the United States.

“The majority of yellow corn imports represent 17 million American tons, with the restriction that they are intended for the industrial sector and not for human consumption. In Mexico this is not allowed.

The goal of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is to achieve food self-sufficiency in corn, beans, wheat, rice, milk, beef, pork and chicken, basic products that have been developed through the Wellness program.
