Porsche Penske Motorsport will battle for outright victory in the world’s top endurance races with four 963 hybrid prototypes.
From 2023, two LMDh-spec hybrid prototypes will compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and two more in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
The new model, presented at Goodwood (England), incorporates a color combination typical of Porsche racing cars: white, red and black. Official drivers of recognized prestige will take turns at the wheel of these prototypes equipped with a 680 horsepower engine.
“The new Porsche 963 should continue the legacy of models as legendary as the 917, 935, 956, 962 and 919 Hybrid. I’m sure we’ll be up to the task when it comes to technology and having created a team structure that will take us to victory,” comments Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport.
The official racing debut of the Porsche 963 is scheduled for January 2023 at the 24 Hours of Daytona in the United States. Meanwhile, the WEC has opened the door this season to testing. Porsche Penske Motorsport is due to carry out a general test at the last race of the season (without possibility of scoring), which will be held in Bahrain in November 2022.
Compliant with LMDh regulations, the Porsche 963 is built on an LMP2 category chassis. The framework is provided by Canadian high-tech company Multimatic. The hybrid propulsion system is based on that of the 918 Spyder. It is made up of a 4.6-liter twin-turbo V8 engine and a series of hybridization components supplied by the companies Bosch, Williams Advanced Engineering and Xtrac. The new prototype inherits the DNA of the RS Spyder, with which Porsche and Penske won numerous victories between 2005 and 2008. The design of the new Porsche 963 is derived from the classic 956 and 962 of the 1980s.
