The Mariachis want to have their “Garibaldi” in Acapulco – El Sol de Acapulco

Despite the fact that the Mariachi was declared by Unesco as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, in Acapulco the government authorities ignored this group which, playing and singing various genres of popular music which symbolizes Mexican identity, They turned a deaf ear and ignored their requests to open space for them and be another attraction for domestic and foreign tourists.

The Mariachis of Acapulco also want to have their Garibaldi, a place where they are and where locals and tourists come to hear them sing and play, because currently the place where they were on Cuauhtémoc Avenue outside the Bar Domino and near Manzanares Funeral Home, has disappeared.

At that time it was a tradition of the mariachis to play and sing for the customers who came to the bars or in their vehicles and they parked on the avenue, But many of these businesses have closed and following the entry of the Acabus and the ban on parking, people no longer visit them and now use social networks to promote themselves.

“Before, we were at the Modelo service station, it was our meeting point, or at the Domino bar, near Manzanare.Yes, but we don’t go there like before to stand guard or lasso, that is, lasso the chamba and all that collapsed when the acabús entered because they no longer let cars park and all that was lost; the bars also closed, all of that was lost due to a lot of things, like insecurity.

José Luis Cárdenas López of the group Mariachi Juvenil Santa Cecilia, said that several municipal and state governments raised the request for a space for this traditional music group in Acapulco but everything remains a promise.

“A space for us has been offered to several governments because it is necessary and in fact it has already been offered to several governments who have passed and there is no response, as always when they want the vote they say Yes and and then they forget everything”.

He recalled that with the Politician they had the closest relationship, but everything was promised, it was with the former PRD mayor, Evodio Velázquez, “he is Marichero, his family loves the mariachi but with him we had a closer relationship, I quote, several bands went to his office and played inside of the presence and he told us that he was going to help us and that he was going to make requests with instruments, but it all stopped there”.

He added that the request for a Mariachi place in Acapulco was also requested from several former mayors and that they were asked places like the Parque de la Reyna, the Zócalo

Said the mariachis in Acapulco are hired by foreign tourists As is the case with Canadians.

Even during the interview, José Luis Cárdenas revealed that on Wednesday night they were hired to play for some Canadians at a private party “They love mariachi and every time they come to Acapulco they hire us.”
