The Canadian TikToker Paula He went viral expressing his opinion on the Chilean customs he hates the most. Thanks to TikTok, Paula, who lives in Chile with her partner, shared a video in which she talks about the cultural contrast she experienced.
One of the customs that has been hardest for him to get used to is the closeness when greeting people. Paula mentioned: “It took me a long time to get used to, it's kissing and hugging people when you meet them.. This greeting tradition I kiss you walking into a room was something that made him feel “quite uncomfortable”.
“Having to walk into the room and kiss and hug every single person when you walk into a party, even if you've never met them before and have no idea what connection you have with that person.”he added.
In the video, Paula recounted a particular experience that made her feel uncomfortable. “I had to kiss and hug a 60 year old man who had no idea who he was and I felt really uncomfortable with that”, He shared. This social practice is ingrained in Chilean culture, but for her, as a foreigner, it was a disconcerting experience.
“I know I might be rude, but sometimes you just have to respect your own cultural boundaries,” she concluded.

Despite initial difficulties, Paula noted that over time, she came to understand and accept this form of greeting. Now, greeting with a kiss and a hug has become second nature to her.
Paula's opinion sparked various reactions on social media, while some followers pointed out that it was not an obligation to greet in this way, others sympathized with the girl because they felt the same way.
“No one forces you to kiss a stranger, even Chileans don't do it, just a kiss on the cheek if you don't know them, and even then it's not an obligation”one user wrote.
“I'm Chilean and I feel very uncomfortable hugging and kissing people hahaha so I understand you”pointed out a compatriot.
