This was confirmed by the Canadian newspaper Toronto Star: “Exceptional urban planner Gil Peñalosa joins the race for mayor of Toronto”, headlined the media.
Guillermo Peñalosa, for his part, expanded on the news via his Twitter account:
“Thank you. It won’t be easy, but together, all of us who want an affordable, fair and sustainable Toronto can elect a new mayor and most council members. The pandemic has shown us that we can/must live differently. ”
Toronto mayoral elections are scheduled for October 24, 2022. Peñalosa faces, among other candidates, John Tory, who has been mayor of this city since 2014.
Guillermo Peñalosa is the founder of 8 80 Cities, a non-profit organization that works on actions and projects for mobility and public space.
Through 8 80, Peñalosa has advised decision makers in more than 350 cities around the world.
Guillermo Peñalosa was director of the District Recreational and Sports Institute (IDRD) under the Antanas Mockus administration.
