For the first time, the Breaking for Gold Series, a stop on the international circuit, will bring together the world’s best in Latin America. The event, which takes place in the western zone of Rio and will last until Saturday (15), will bring together 300 B-Boys and B-Girls, as break athletes are also called: a type of street dance that involves jumps, turns and acrobatics, to the sound of various musical rhythms: hip-hop, funk, soul and jazz, among others).
Organized by the International Dance Sports Federation (WDSF), the competition is one of the most significant competitions for the world ranking, which will close at the end of the year: the first 14 of each gender (male and female ) will advance to the 2024 Olympic Qualification. In addition to the Brazilians, the event will bring together athletes from the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, China, France, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Spain, Kazakhstan and Colombia.
Among the world stars who will participate in the Breaking for Gold Series in Rio are the Canadian Phil Wizard, world champion last year, and the Kazakh B-Boy Amir, champion of the first stage of the circuit, disputed in February in Kitakyushu (Japan ). ). In the women’s competition, the most sought-after athletes for the title are B-Girl India (Netherlands), European champion, and two great Japanese rivals: B-Girl 671 (vice leader in the ranking) and B-Girl Ami .
“After the World Cup and the Continental category, which give direct access [a París 2024], the World Series are the main qualifying stages for B.Boys and B.Girls who want to be in Paris in 2024 and Brazil will host one of them. We are very happy to have the privilege of hosting this event at home and for the athletes of the world in search of the Olympic dream and, of course, to encourage a lot our team from Brazil”, said José Bispo de Assis, Technical Director of the National Sports Dance Council (CNDD).
Brazil will have six athletes (male and female), aged 19 to 35, who will fight for the title in the Rio stage. Among the B-Boys are Luan San (Brazilian champion), Leony and Rato EVN. In the women’s competition, the team includes Nathana, Mini Japa and Toquinha.
