Ramírez did not provide further details, but his comments followed those he recently gave to El Heraldo newspaper on the prospect of the company investing in this area.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Another Mexican official told Reuters that Tesla had seen the site but gave no indication of its plans.

Local media said Texas-based Tesla, run by tycoon Elon Musk, would build a “gigafactory” in Mexico’s northern state of Nuevo León with an initial investment of around $1 billion. The company has not commented on its plans in Mexico, although Musk has met with the entity’s governor.
