Canada's women's soccer team will have to go to the Olympics without Sydney Collins
The defender suffered a fracture to her left leg during the behind-closed-doors training match against Nigeria on July 18. Gabrielle Carle will replace Collins at the Paris Olympics.
The injury occurred in Collins' first game back from a broken right leg suffered in February 2024.
Veteran midfielder Desiree Scott will fill Carle's previous role as a backup, both of whom played key roles in Team Canada's gold medal win at Tokyo 2020.
“Our thoughts are with Sydney at this difficult time. He has worked incredibly hard to return in time for Paris 2024 and, although this is a setback, we know he will come back stronger. He will be with us in spirit every step of the way,” Bev Priestman said.,National Team Head Coach: “With the depth and resilience of our team, we have a ‘next up’ mentality, and Gabby and Desiree’s experience will be invaluable to our team’s success.”
Prior to joining the Olympic team, Collins, 24, was selected eighth overall in the 2023 National Women's Soccer League college draft by the North Carolina Braveness and started twice for the club.
