The issue of track limits has been one of the most discussed “discussions” in the “paddock” in recent years of Formula 1. On circuits such as the Red Bull Ring -Austria-, the Paul Ricard -France- , Losail -Qatar- …the asphalt loopholes cause drivers to tend to accelerate more in the lanes, thus exceeding the white lines which demarcate the end of the route.
Without going any further, this year’s Austrian Grand Prix was marked by the shame of track limits and, in Qatar this weekend, they were once again the protagonists.
Although there were not as many penalties as in the Austrian event, several drivers were affected both in qualifying and in the race due to this problem. One of them was Lance Stroll, who was unable to score points for Aston Martin due to some penalties he received for crossing the white line several times. “It’s a bit of a joke that they penalize for that; “They don’t understand what Formula 1 is and what they are doing to us,” said the Canadian.
On the other hand, he says that going three millimeters off track does not mean gaining the slightest advantage. Therefore, he believes the issue of track limits is something the FIA needs to consider for the future.
“They impose lane limit penalties on us while making it narrower… and we can’t use the same sidewalks, because if we do, the tires might fail. I think the lane limits issue is something that simply needs to be resolved. We saw Austria, we saw this weekend… people get penalties when We didn’t even gain any advantage by differing by three millimeters“, expressed.
“60 laps of concentration, temperatures of 65 to 70 degrees inside the car… You know, that’s the most frustrating part of it all. We worked hard and had a good race to finish ninth instead of eleventh without any points and two penalties. It’s a really frustrating result to get nothing out of it“, added.
The Aston Martin driver also spoke about how difficult the race was for everyone involved. Some were more affected than others by such high temperatures, but Stroll was undoubtedly one of those who was most exhausted after the 57 laps.
The Canadian was about to faint as soon as he got out of the car… even though he wasn’t the only one. That said, it’s no surprise that he and other drivers asked to avoid racing in these conditions, since yesterday’s physical deterioration was enormous for everyone.
“I don’t know, maybe they like it as part of the show. But yeah, having to concentrate like that, at the time of year we come here, the temperature is too high. Maybe there is some sort of ventilation system, something we need to take into account for these type of hot races like Singapore and Qatar.” he suggested.
“The cars are getting stiffer and heavier. It was a soft track, but you can feel the stiffness of the cars when you go over the curbs and all that, and I think that’s a big part of the physical side .It’s just driving, The fact that these cars are so hard and have such high G-forces makes it really difficult.. Maybe that’s something we need to address: thinking about softer cars, some sort of ventilation system that we can bring to this type of racing… And spending more time in the sauna, I guess! “, explained Lance Stroll to conclude.
