Seville, November 12 (EFE).- Despite her disappointing and crushing defeat in the semi-final against the Czech Barbora Krejcikova (6-2 and 6-1), the young Marina Stakusic, revelation of the competition, has regained her best level and beat Martina Trevisan 7-5, 6-3 to give Canada the lead against Italy in the Billie Jean King Cup final.
Only one victory separates the North American team from making history and winning its first title in the competition. Far from the favoritism of other teams at the start of the event, Canada went slow, undercover, and became the big sensation.
Stakusic, 258th in the women’s ranking, without any experience in the professional circuit, usual in lower-ranking tournaments and without presence with her national team until arriving in Seville, overthrew Trevisan, 43rd in the WTA ranking in an hour and 48 minutes.
Stakusic gave Canada the lead, which has two chances to close out its victory. Next, Leylah Fernandez will face European Jasmine Paolini. And the double, in the end, features the couple formed by Fernández and Gabriela Dabrowski facing Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Martina Trevisan.
