Sport landscape in Canada for 2022

By Daniel Pena

We are one week away from closing the first month of 2022, given what is happening with the wave of infections, I share my point of view, that the sports world is reluctant to stop drastically like in 2020. Canada maintains its participation in everything, and boy, is there a lot of sport to come. Events are scheduled and it’s the challenge of being in the US and global professional leagues where you play without the “Canadian restrictions”, with total “normality”.

As I mentioned before, this is a historic year for the men’s football team playing with one foot in the Qatar World Cup and has 2 decisive matches pending, one of them against the States United on January 30, which sold out in seconds at the stadium in Hamilton, Ontario; however, tickets were canceled due to restrictions and on January 20, Canada Soccer announced a new presale and new sale scheduled for January 25 and 26 respectively, with capacity reduced to 50%.

Winter Olympics

The canadian team plans to send around 211 athletes to the Winter Olympics to be held in Beijing starting Feb. 4 and it’s undoubtedly an event that will keep Canadians on screens for obvious reasons, according to CBC Sports 23 medals are expected, including 7 gold.

big leagues

For baseball fans, the regular season returns on March 31 and the Toronto Blue Jays squad boasts 13 players of Latino descent who are keeping the playoff chances alive that reach almost into 2021, especially if Vladimir Guerrero Jr. , 22-year-old Dominican star, is finding the rhythm he showed last season.

Formula 1

In terms of motorsport, Montreal announced months ago that Guilles Villeneuve headquarters is back in Formula 1 with the Grand Prix to be held from June 17 to 19, there are tickets available and how to pass the possibility of seeing the Mexican Sergio Pérez who travels to Canada for the first time with RedBull Racing, after a magnificent season with the team.

MLS football

MLS will undoubtedly cause a stir, with the arrival of Lorenzo Insigne to Toronto FC and also the possible arrival of Mexican Carlos Salcedo and other signings the team have made in recent weeks, watch out Toronto FC as the playoffs are possible. For the time being, the league begins on February 26, but it will be until the summer that all the acquisitions of the team will be seen on the ground.
