Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds will receive more than $300 million after US telecommunications company T-Mobile offered to buy him a telephone network in which he owns a stake.
Reynolds owns 25% of telecommunications company Mint Mobile, which T-Mobile will buy for $1.35 billion.
“We are very pleased that T-Mobile is overcoming an aggressive last minute offer from my mother Tammy Reynolds,” the actor joked in a press release announcing the sale.
T-Mobile is the second largest mobile carrier in the United States.
The actor actively participated in Mint’s advertising campaigns thanks to his firm Maximum Effort.
That company also created ads for Peloton, as well as its gin brand, Aviation American Gin, which it sold to beverage giant Diageo in 2020 for $610 million.
In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Reynolds described the company’s work as “rapid advertising”, with the aim of creating short viral advertisements.
“Everything we do is rudimentary. It’s fast, it’s cheap,” he said.
Additionally, the actor has shares in Welsh football team Wrexham AFC.
Hollywood career
Reynolds still appears in movies and is one of the highest paid actors in the world.
In fact, he was the second highest-paid actor in the world in 2020, according to Forbes, earning more than $20 million per movie, behind Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
In a 2018 interview, he recalled his first acting role in 1991, when he was a teenager and had a side job as a newspaper boy.
He was paid US$150 for this performance.
“I thought I was like a billionaire”said Reynolds.
In recent years, rumors have swirled that he might try to buy the Ottawa Senators hockey team.
Reynolds is one of many celebrities who have businesses that aren’t movie related.
Ashton Kutcher owns a venture capital firm with stakes in Uber, Skype and Airbnb. Snoop Dogg and Jared Leto are investors in Reddit, to name a few examples.
Despite his fortune, Reynolds continues to act. He is set to star in ‘Deadpool 3’ alongside actor Hugh Jackman as Wolverine next year.
