Russia today announced sanctions against approximately 100 Canadian citizens, including senior government officials, businessmen, activists, financial institutions, media correspondents and actors, including Jim Carrey, the Foreign Office said.
These citizens do not have the right to enter Russia “in response to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s regime’s practice of imposing sanctions on Russian leaders, politicians and parliamentariansthe business community, experts and journalists, cultural personalities, as well as anyone deemed reprehensible by the Russophobic Canadian authorities. ยป.
The measure was taken reciprocally, Russian diplomacy said in a statement.
Among those sanctioned are the head of the Canadian Communications Security Authority, Caroline Xavier, the premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, the former premier of the province of Quebec Jean Charest and the former attorney general , Cabinet Minister and Member of the House of Commons, Peter Gordon MacKay.
Also on the Russian blacklist is the CEO of Volatus Aerospace, Glen Lynch and several board members of Credit Union of Ukrainein addition to Steve Flagjournalist and grandson of Stepan Bandera, referring to the Ukrainian nationalist and collaborationist leader.
Bandera during World War II initially aligned himself with the Germans in demanding independence from the Soviet Union, although he ended up in a Nazi concentration camp.
Similarly, among those affected by the Russian restrictions are the actor Jim Carrye, actress Katheryn Winnik, (known for the Vikings series), writer and filmmaker David Bezmozgisas well as various correspondents from CBC, CTV, Global News, poet, novelist and literary critic Margaret Atwood, among others.
