Punished Canada advances in women's soccer with win over Colombia, who also qualify

Despite losing 1-0 to Canada on Wednesday, Colombia secured their place in the quarter-finals of women's football at the Olympic Games.

Vanessa Gilles scored the only goal of the match in the 62nd minute, but Colombia finished third in their group and managed to place among the top two teams in that group.

More surprising was what was achieved by Canada, who advanced to the next phase despite losing six points in the tournament due to a drone spying scandal.

Colombia will face Spain in the quarter-finals on Saturday. The same day, Canada will face Germany in Marseille.

On the same day, the Canadians, the current Olympic champions, failed in their attempt to revoke the points reduction awarded by FIFA for filming New Zealand's training in France from the air.

Canada, which won its first two matches but did not earn any points because of the sanction, came into Wednesday's clash in Nice forced to triumph to have any chance of qualifying.

In the other group match, Marie-Antoinette Kototo scored in the 22nd and 49th minutes as France beat New Zealand 2-1 in Lyon.

The United States beat Australia 2-1 to top their group. They will collide with Japan on Saturday in Paris.

Trinity Rodman and Korbin Albert each scored goals as the United States went undefeated at the Games. The Americans had already advanced to the quarterfinals.

Brazil, who qualified for the quarter-finals as one of the best thirds, will play the quarter-finals against France in Lyon, despite their 2-0 defeat against Spain.

Brazil captain Marta was sent off in the first half. The six-time winner of the Olympic Games is competing in her sixth Olympic Games.

After receiving the expulsion, he left the court in tears, after knocking down Olga Carmona.

Marta, 38, said this would be her last tournament with the Brazilian team.

Japan finished second in the group after beating Nigeria 3-1.

The United States is the most successful women's team at the Olympics, with four gold medals. It plays under Emma Hayes, recently appointed coach after a disappointing World Cup performance.

Germany moved up to second place behind the Americans after crushing Zambia 4-1 in Saint-Etienne.
