Poor air quality alerts are issued for large swaths of the United States and Canada due to thick layers of smoke covering much of the sky in both countries

Thick, dark smoke from the hundreds of wildfires burning across Canada blanketed skies across the Northeast and Midwest United States, as well as those across the Ohio River Basin and parts of central Utah. Atlantic, causing poor air quality warnings to be issued in several states and cities across the United States. The haze from the fires has triggered warnings of dangerous levels of air pollution, affecting tens of millions of people. For its part, New York City on Tuesday reported the worst air quality of any major city on the planet.

Currently, more than 400 fires are still burning across virtually all of Canada, forcing tens of thousands of people from their homes. The province of Quebec is dealing with some of the worst fires, many of which were started by lightning, which sent an orange haze blanketing the cities of Ottawa and Toronto. Officials in the United States and Canada are urging people with heart and lung conditions, as well as other vulnerable groups, to stay indoors for as long as possible.
