With the presence of the Minister of Tourism and Sports of the Nation, Matías Lammens, and the 1980 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, the panel “Tourism and Human Rights” was carried out within the III Forum human rights, in the Memory and Human Rights Space (formerly ESMA).
The Undersecretary for Quality, Accessibility and Sustainability of National Tourism, Inés Albergucci; the legislator of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Manuel Socías; and Spanish researcher and broadcaster Ernest Cañada. The panel discussed the challenges surrounding the development of social tourism as public policy, the right to rest and leisure, coexistence in public space and tourism as a policy of active memory, moderated by Florencia Halfon.
During his speech, Lammens said, “We are clear that rest is a human right. For this reason, for us, caring for and valuing our tourist units has a very important meaning: it is not only recovering them in terms of heritage, but also showing what we want in Argentina: an Argentina of development, with inclusion , with generation of employment and also of equal opportunities”.
Nobel laureate Pérez Esquivel emphasized, “Everything we do in Chapadmalal with Jóvenes y Memoria is to generate critical awareness and values so that they can be people and live with dignity. Memory is not made to stay in the past: it illuminates the present so that through it we can build life. It is what we sow that we will bequeath to future generations”.
In turn, Albergucci pointed out: “It is very important for us to disseminate initiatives related to social tourism during these events, which also have a direct relationship with the history of our country in terms of building a more egalitarian”.
For his part, Socías explained: “We are living a process of commercialization of public space that can affect democratic coexistence. As a state, we have the challenge of thinking about what we do with it from a rights perspective”.
