The famous American coach Rana Reiderknown for guiding athletics stars Andre DeGrasse And Marcel Jacobs to the Olympic victories, was expelled from Paris 2024. The surprising decision comes amid controversy surrounding allegations of sexual misconduct against the 54-year-old coach.
According to information from PAReider had been the subject of an investigation by the American Center for Safe sport due to allegations of sexual misconduct. Although his one-year probationary period ended in May, new revelations have forced Canadian authorities to re-evaluate his accreditation as De Grasse's personal trainer.
Agree with World of sporthe Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) issued a statement Tuesday saying: “The decision to grant him this access was based on the fact that his probationary period ended in May of this year, that he has not been subject to any other suspensions or sanctions and that he otherwise met our eligibility requirements.” However, the organization added: “On Sunday, August 4, we learned of new information regarding the desirability of Mr. Reider continuing to be accredited by Team Canada at the Paris 2024 Games. After discussions with Athletics Canada, it was agreed to revoke the accreditations.”
Reider's departure means De Grasse will be without his coach as he attempts to defend his 200m gold medal. Andre qualified for the semi-finals after finishing second in his heat, behind 100m champion Noah Lyles of the United States.
Additionally, two athletes, named in court documents, and a third unnamed athlete have accused Reider of multiple crimes. Two of them claim they were victims of repeated sexual and emotional abuse, while the third accuses him of sexual and verbal harassment.
The newspaper Guardian was the first to highlight the investigation into Safe sport on Reider in November 2021, on similar charges. The adviser was later found to have had a romantic relationship, described as consensual but with a power imbalance, with a British athlete 26 years his junior.
DeGrassewho has worked with Reider since 2018 and won gold in the 200 meters and bronze in the 100 meters at the Tokyo Olympics, had briefly left the American coach to work with Irishman John Coghlan. However, he resumed training with Reider nine months ago in Jacksonville, Florida.
For its part, Marcel Jacobswho was also coached by Reider and won gold in the 100 meters in Tokyo, moved to Florida in September last year to continue his training under Reider. Now, without their coach, both athletes find themselves in an uncertain situation heading into the key events in Paris.
