The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today commemorated the third anniversary of the death of Peruvian diplomat and ambassador Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, who also served as Secretary General of the United Nations.

Javier Perez de Cuellar he was born on January 19, 1920 and has represented Peru in Switzerland, Poland, Venezuela and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) as an ambassador.

In 1981, on his return to Peru after having been under-secretary at the United Nations, President Fernando Belaunde Terry offered him to become Peru’s ambassador to Brazil. Position he could not occupy because the Senate rejected his nomination.

However, two months after the Legislative Assembly rejected his nomination, he was elected Secretary-General of the United Nationsbeing the first and only Latin American to hold such an important position to date.

On January 1, 1982, he took office who would fill our country with pride, bringing his experience and the name of Peru to the most inhospitable places in the world, doing such commendable work that he was re-elected for a second term ending on January 1, 1992.

For all this it was winner of the Prince of Asturias Prize for International Cooperation in 1985 and he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.
