Microsoft’s data center region in Mexico will begin operations in the second half of 2023, the Redmond, Wash.-based company announced.
Three years after its CEO, Satya Nadella, announced its construction with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, as part of the “Innovate for Mexico” investment plan, the company led by Rafael Sánchez in the country has unveiled some details of the project .
“Central Mexico,” as the company will call the region, will be located in Querétaro. Its modular structure, with several buildings, will allow it to house three availability zones; that is, physically separate locations, consisting of one or more data centers with independent power, cooling, and networking.
In these areas, its core cloud services will be deployed, including Azure, M365 and Dynamics 365 capabilities, and its users whose data resides in the country will benefit from a dedicated connection, reduced latency and compliance with international standards. .
Microsoft said in A declaration that its data center region, number 62 in the world and the first in Spanish-speaking Latin America, will strengthen the connectivity infrastructure in Mexico with a next-generation architecture, which will enable more efficient network deployment and maintain data residency and critical information in the country.
Generate jobs
The construction of Microsoft’s data center region in Mexico has generated more than 1,000 jobs and trained 13,000 citizens in Querétaro, according to the company.
The company did not specify how much of the $1.1 billion in Innovate for Mexico were assigned to the construction of data centers in the region.
Its investment adds to that of other technology companies in this entity, such as Amazon, which launched its Availability Zone last January; Oracle, which activated its first cloud region last year, or Kio Networks, which is building the Mega Data Center Campus.

It even maintains a collaboration with UN Habitat to ensure the integrity of the social fabric and improve public spaces.
To reduce environmental impact, México Central will use mechanical refrigerators, systems that use water to cool the air through the process of evaporation (liquid refrigeration) and achieve its overall goal of replenishing more water than this which is consumed by the end of this decade. .
Microsoft said the Mexico center also includes innovations to ensure data integrity, security and availability, with the highest standards of multi-layered protection as well as encryption and physical security features within the facilities.
